Self-taught pianist and occasional rapper Alfa Mist blends thoughtful jazz with hip hop beats and a touch of melancholia. Growing up in Newham, East London, he began his musical journey as a grime and hip-hop producer, but soon found himself drawn to the jazz, world music and film soundtracks he discovered through sampling. His last release with Emmasive was rooted in neo soul sounds, whilst his fresh single 'Galaxy' resides firmly in the jazz world. Ambience is created from the very start; by rain sticks, a sleepy trumpet, and Alfa's gentle feel of the keys. Slow and steady, the groove begins, laying the base for the Rhodes piano to converse with the electric guitar. Captivating psychedelic wah synths give the song a 70s sound that's reminiscent of artists like Roy Ayres and Ronnie Foster. 'Galaxy' is out now on Decca Records. -Ellie Rose-Davies
